With many analysts predicting that Sprint will be the next wireless carrier to sell the Apple iPhone 5, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse said Wednesday in a conference full-year targets in 2011 does not include any sales iPhone's potential.
Again, Hesse declined to say Wednesday whether the company was considering selling the iPhone in May, which is rumored to be in early to mid-October, probably until October 4. On the contrary, would only say that, in order to meet the target for the year, Sprint should have a "very strong fourth quarter."
If the company were to sell the iPhone 5, the objectives for the year would have to be changed, said Hesse.
The third-largest mobile operator in the United States, Sprint has struggled to retain customers, while AT & T and Verizon have dominated the market. AT & T offers first iPhone, while Verizon began selling the iPhone earlier this year. In addition, Sprint has also been affected by cost-conscious customers to move towards low-cost carriers that offer prepaid service. Some analysts predict that Sprint sells the iPhone 5 could start a recovery of the company.
However, Hesse told the call that the company add subscribers for the full year 2011 and that its benefit would remain more or less the same in 2010.
Sprint has been a strong critic of the pending merger between AT & T and T-Mobile USA, the fourth largest company in the United States. The company has complained that a duopoly in the wireless market competition lead to suffocation. Sources told Reuters that Sprint was in talks to buy T-Mobile USA before Deutsch Telekom, the parent company of T-Mobile USA, concluded that the agreement with AT & T.Executives at AT & T have been critical of the measure, calling it a double standard
"Now public reflection of Mr. Hesse has made much clearer motivations," said Jim Cicconi, AT & T vice president of legislative affairs, told Reuters. "The fact that it would act in their own economic interest is not surprising. That would expect the U.S. government to be a willing partner is."
The Justice Department has recently filed a lawsuit to try to block the merger, arguing that the reduction in competition, customers likely would see higher prices for the weakest of service. A federal court has set a trial date of Feb.13.
Sprint Nextel shares fell 2.4 percent on Wednesday to close at $ 3.25.
