When it comes to control the computer using hotkeys, I'm a big fan of AutoHotkey. However, if you're starting on the road to domination full keyboard, AutoHotkey can seem a little intimidating. Accessories such as Active may make it easier to get started with AutoHotkey, but some people prefer to go to a simple Windows application hotkeys, at least initially. HotkeyP is a free, open source application that combines a lot of functionality with a simple interface.

What does HotkeyP
HotkeyP is not a complete alternative AutoHotkey. First, you should know that there is a scripting engine, while it has limited support "macros" are not going to use scripts for automating complex code of Windows hotkeys. The HotkeyP else does not address is the replacement text. Again, you can do this with HotkeyP, but if all you need is the automatic replacement of text can be better with a dedicated solution like PhraseExpress.

Now that we have to leave the way, let's see what HotkeyP does well.

Setting up a shortcut key

This is what HotkeyP main window looks like this:

windows hotkeys

This is what happens when you click Add (to add a new shortcut key):

configure hotkeys windows

As you can see, there is a line of code in sight. Just decide what combination of keys you want to use and configure a command to it. The command can be an application to run, or operating system (such as "monitor off", above). Let's look at some of the operations available:

configure hotkeys windows

That's a very rich selection, and that's only the first category. In fact, there are many available operations, a "quick search" could have the utility function.

Even so, the commands are divided quite logical, so it is not difficult to find what you're looking for (if available). You can also have asked for confirmation before running HotkeyP a particular key - after all, you may not want to turn off the computer without asking for any kind of first confirmation.

Since there is a scheduling solution HotkeyP of right, have to settle for operations already offer. Above you can see the system menu, the menu screen contains operations such as turning off the monitor, changing the desktop resolution, and even change wallpapers. The Window menu lets you change the opacity of a window, they always on top, hide the window or application, the task of changing, and more. The multimedia menu is not very impressive - it only lets you change the volume and perform operations related to CD (CD eject, etc.).

Documentation

windows hotkeys

HotkeyP includes a CHM file that consists of a long list of all commands and arguments. Some commands are easy to use because it does not take parameters, but if you're trying to do something complex (for example, change the resolution of the screen), you really will have to consult the manual - no way to find out what the parameters of a command is only using the interface.

Final Thoughts

For novice users who just want to start with shortcut keys Windows, HotkeyP is certainly an interesting option. I think the time you just need simple commands (such as applications running on the computer, or carry out operations which do not require arguments), HotkeyP have no problem. But if you find yourself constantly to reach the manual to find out the parameters for the different commands, you may want to graduate AutoHotkey.
